Fun Facts about Richland GMC

  • The church was founded in 1890 south of the Athens city limits in a small settlement then called White Hall Settlement, which was later Mechanicsburg, before being incorporated into the City of Athens.
  • The original name was the Wright Methodist Church, named after the first pastor. It then became known as the Methodist Protestant Church, and in 1927 adopted the name Richland Avenue Methodist Church as it was located on Richland Avenue.
  • The church moved from Richland Avenue to Pomeroy Road in 1962 as the property was bought by John Galbreath when he constructed the Ohio University Inn on that location.
  • The church structure on Pomeroy Road is now known as the Richland Global Methodist Church.
  • Over the years the church has been affiliated with several different Methodist denominations. In order these are: Methodist Protestant, The Methodist, United Methodist, and now Global Methodist.
  • The steeple from the original church was moved to a hill behind the current church and now serves as a gazebo.
